Ziva review: the Godot AI plugin, what it costs, and the alternatives
Ziva is an AI agent plugin for the Godot editor. It reads your whole project, edits scenes and scripts from a chat dock, and can run your game and play it to check its own work. It's for Godot developers who want an agent that already knows their project, not a chatbot they paste code into. There's a free plan, it runs on a Claude Code or Codex subscription you may already pay for, and it's closed source.
Our take: it's the most complete way to put an AI agent inside stock Godot today, with real reliability complaints on big projects and a free tier that keeps changing. Sources: Ziva's docs and changelog, and what Godot developers have said in public, checked on September 29, 2026.

What it does
The Ziva Godot plugin installs like any other addon on Godot 4.2 or later, on Windows, macOS and Linux (installation). Per the docs and changelog, it can:
- See scenes, nodes, scripts, resources, project settings, editor errors and the running game, then create or change scenes, write GDScript or C#, fix errors and run tests. Every turn can be undone.
- Run your game: launch a scene, send keyboard and mouse input, and screenshot the result.
- Make sprites and textures, and add hosted multiplayer and analytics.
- Use Claude, GPT or Gemini, your own Claude Code or Codex subscription, OpenRouter credit, or a local model.
- Act as a local MCP server for Claude Code, Codex or Cursor, and load your AGENTS.md and skills.
The headline feature is the Playtest Agent, shipped in 3.1.4 in August 2026. You write a goal. It plays your game with real keyboard and mouse input and comes back with a pass or fail verdict and a saved video. Ziva's own FAQ is blunt about the limit: "It returns a pass or fail against a goal you set. It does not tell you whether the game is fun."

What it costs
From the pricing page:
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby | Free | All core features; bring your own Claude or Codex subscription |
| Basic | $20/month | No message cap on Ziva Baby and Ziva Smart, the everyday models |
| Pro | $50/month | Adds Ziva Genius ("our most capable model"), Sonnet and Opus models, and the Playtest Agent |
| Ultra | $200/month | Everything in Pro, with more usage |
Your own Claude Code or ChatGPT Codex subscription works on every plan (existing subscriptions), and local models don't touch your included usage (local providers). One warning: Hobby's hosted usage has changed during 2026 and is about to change again, so ignore any number you read about it and check the pricing page.
What developers say
The praise clusters around one thing: it knows the project. Gamita on godotforums.org, August 5, 2026: "The fact that the AI model is aware of the project's code and nodes has been a GAME CHANGER for how my code is written compared to ChatGPT or Gemini." Raven Black on the Godot Asset Store, September 4: "I've been making games for decades so it's not like I can't do it without assistance, but Ziva is really pretty great". Their caveat: "It will make you lazy."
The loudest complaint is reliability on big projects. BakaNeko228 ran plugin 3.1.2 on a 300MB visual novel and an 8GB machine, and hit timeouts, dropped connections and a scene that crashed on load. Their verdict: "This makes the tool unreliable on non-tiny projects." Ziva's founder replied the same day: "Refund is done. The timeout, the socket drops, and the type mismatch crash are bugs and they're getting fixed." The next two releases gave checkpoints on large projects more time.
The free tier is the other sore spot. Moonshain, Asset Store, September 18: "They now changed to Line 3.0 for the free version and it can't do anything other than the most basic changes."
What other comparisons get wrong
Two comparison pages from Summer Engine, a competitor, have aged:
- Summer Engine vs Ziva, June 6, 2026, says Ziva "cannot play the game and it cannot read what the running game printed, because it does not run the game." Ziva 3.0.0 shipped thirteen days later with live playtest, 3.1.4 added the Playtest Agent, and since 3.1.5 runtime errors reach the agent. The page's verdict has aged better: "Ziva is the best version of 'AI inside stock Godot.'"
- Godot AI Assistant Hub vs Ziva, undated, says "With an addon like Ziva the practical scope is your scripts: read them, write them, refactor them." Ziva's docs say it creates and changes scenes, nodes and signals. The same Summer Engine page also says addons, "Ziva included in typical setups, ask you to supply an OpenAI or Anthropic key and then bill per token through that provider". Ziva needs no API key. Hosted models come with the plans.
What it can't do
- No inline autocomplete. It's an agent you talk to.
- Closed source, shipped as compiled releases. The privacy policy says "We never store your project data on our servers." and "We never use your code to train AI models." The provider you pick handles your code under its own terms.
- Godot is the self-serve product. Unity is in beta and Unreal is enterprise.
- The Playtest Agent needs Pro or Ultra, and heavier hosted use needs a paid plan.
- Local model hosts are set through environment variables, not in the UI.
Ziva alternatives
Four free, MIT-licensed plugins, then one separate editor:
- Godot AI by dlight: an MCP bridge so Claude Code, Codex or Cursor can read the scene tree and errors and run the game.
- Fennara: chat dock plus MCP server, your own keys or local models. Godot 4.5 or newer.
- Gamedev AI: in-editor agent on your own keys. Godot 4.6 or later.
- AI Assistant Hub: the pick for fully local models through Ollama or llama.cpp.
- Summer Engine: a separate AI-first editor built on Godot, free to $200 a month, macOS and Windows only.
